The nations of Westeros have by and large failed to adapt to the changing times, perhaps unsurprisingly as the continent was for millennia the western limit of the known world and seen as a distant land of barbarism and eternal winter by the civilizations of Essos.  Today the maps no longer stop at Westeros, but this image of a backwards and superstitious people on the edge of the world obsessing over the legendary exploits and rivalries of their barbarian forefathers remains.  Similarly, the people of Westeros remain largely ignorant and distrustful of the outside world, offering nothing in the way of resources, ideas or innovations and seeking little in return.  Perhaps the only positive stereotype attributed to them is that they are a hardy people of great moral and physical strength whose misfortune often leads them across the Narrow Sea and beyond, into the armies of the east, or to the frozen north as miners and lumberjacks in Norvoyos.  Much of what we
